Ingredients

Scale

For the Fritters:

  • 2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional, for a smoky flavor)
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup milk

For Frying:

  • Vegetable oil

For Serving (optional):

  • Sour cream
  • Green salad
  • Baked beans

Instructions

  • Prepare the Onions:
    • Thinly slice the sweet onions and set aside.
  • Make the Batter:
    • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and paprika (if using).
    • In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and milk together.
    • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until combined. The batter should be thick but slightly pourable.
  • Fry the Fritters:
    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
    • Dip the onion slices into the batter, coating them evenly. Fry in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan.
    • Fry for about 3–4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Drain and Serve:
    • Remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
    • Serve warm with sour cream, a green salad, or baked beans for a complete meal!

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the batter.
  • These fritters taste best fresh but can be reheated in the oven for crispiness.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
