Ingredients
Scale
For the Fritters:
- 2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional, for a smoky flavor)
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup milk
For Frying:
- Vegetable oil
For Serving (optional):
- Sour cream
- Green salad
- Baked beans
Instructions
- Prepare the Onions:
- Thinly slice the sweet onions and set aside.
- Make the Batter:
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and paprika (if using).
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and milk together.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until combined. The batter should be thick but slightly pourable.
- Fry the Fritters:
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
- Dip the onion slices into the batter, coating them evenly. Fry in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry for about 3–4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and Serve:
- Remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve warm with sour cream, a green salad, or baked beans for a complete meal!
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the batter.
- These fritters taste best fresh but can be reheated in the oven for crispiness.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
