Description
A simple, classic cornbread that’s slightly sweet, moist, and bursting with the natural flavor of cornmeal. This versatile recipe pairs perfectly with savory chili, barbecue, or can be enjoyed on its own as a comforting snack.
Ingredients
Scale
- Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (140 g) yellow cornmeal
- ¼–⅓ cup (50–65 g) granulated sugar (adjust for desired sweetness)
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk (or regular milk, if preferred)
- 1 large egg, beaten
- ¼ cup (60 ml) melted butter or vegetable oil
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch square baking pan or a cast-iron skillet.
- Combine Dry Ingredients
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add Wet Ingredients
- In a separate bowl (or large measuring cup), whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and melted butter (or oil).
- Mix the Batter
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour in the wet mixture.
- Stir gently with a spatula or wooden spoon just until combined. Do not overmix; a few small lumps are okay.
- Bake
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan or skillet.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve
- Allow the cornbread to cool for at least 5 minutes before slicing.
- Serve warm with butter, honey, or your favorite spread.
Notes
- Buttermilk Substitution: If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make a quick substitute by mixing 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar with 1 cup of regular milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
- Texture Preference: For a denser, richer cornbread, use slightly less baking powder or add 2 tablespoons of sour cream.
- Cornmeal Grind: The texture of your cornbread can vary based on fine vs. coarse cornmeal. A fine grind yields a more delicate crumb, while coarse cornmeal adds more texture.
- Add-Ins: Feel free to fold in corn kernels, diced jalapeños, shredded cheese, or crumbled bacon for extra flavor.
