Ingredients
  

For the Cupcakes
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup Unsalted butter softened
  • ¾ cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • ½ cup Buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon Brown sugar for filling
  • 1 tablespoon Ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup Chopped nuts optional
For the Swirl Frosting
  • 8 ounces Cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup Unsalted butter softened
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar sifted
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • as needed tablespoon Milk to adjust consistency

Method
 

Preparing the Cupcakes
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a cupcake tin by lining it with paper liners.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
  4. Gradually combine dry ingredients with the wet mixture, alternating with buttermilk until just combined.
  5. Mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and optional chopped nuts in a small bowl for the filling.
  6. Layer one tablespoon of batter into each paper liner, followed by one tablespoon of cinnamon filling, and top with another tablespoon of batter.
  7. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Making the Frosting
  1. Beat softened cream cheese and unsalted butter until smooth. Gradually mix in powdered sugar, then add vanilla extract.
  2. Adjust frosting consistency with milk as needed.
  3. Once cupcakes are completely cool, frost using a piping bag or spatula.
