Step-by-Step Instructions for Char Siu Chicken
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Put chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag and pour half of the marinade over. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  4. Refrigerate the remaining marinade for later use in basting.
  5. Remove the chicken from the refrigerator and allow it to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
  6. Place the marinated chicken on a lined baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  7. In a saucepan, bring the reserved marinade to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes to thicken it.
  8. Brush the thickened marinade over the baked chicken.
  9. Broil the chicken for an additional 2-3 minutes while watching closely for charring.
