Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine 1 cup of warm milk and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast on top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour and ½ teaspoon of salt. Create a well, add the yeast mixture, 2 tablespoons of melted butter, and 1 large egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Cook 1 cup of ground sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat and let it cool.
  6. Punch down the dough, divide into 12 pieces, roll into balls, flatten slightly, and fill with sausage and mozzarella. Pinch to seal.
  7. Pinch the sealed bun tops to form 'petals' and arrange on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Cover buns with a cloth and let rise for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Whisk the second large egg. Brush egg wash over the buns and sprinkle with seeds if desired.
  10. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.
